What is Pharming?

Pharming and online security

Pharming is a type of internet fraud where you inadvertently download a virus to your computer which, in turn, changes the numerical addresses in your computer's hosts file. Then, when you type in an address in your browser, the browser first looks to the hosts file to see if there is an associated numerical address for the website to which you're trying to navigate, retrieves the numerical address and delivers the contents of the page from the internet. So, while you appear to be at the website you've navigated to (since the address in the address bar is what you've typed), you're actually at a fraudulent website.

The best way for you to protect yourself against fraud such as pharming is to have an up-to-date virus scanner and personal firewall installed and running on your computer at all times.

Please note that pharming does not compromise the security of EasyWeb itself.

If you think your account has been compromised, please call EasyLine telephone banking immediately at 1-866-222-3456.
