How do I contribute U.S. dollars (USD) to my TD Direct Investing RSP or TFSA?

Contributions cannot be made directly into your U.S. dollar component Retirement Savings Plan (RSP) or Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). To contribute USD to your RSP/TFSA without exchanging the funds to CAD, you will need to follow the below steps (process takes approximately 5-7 business days):

Step 1:  Purchase a USD money market fund in your USD cash or margin account.

If you do not have a cash or margin account, you cannot contribute USD directly to your U.S. dollar component RSP or TFSA. Learn more about cash and margin accounts.

Step 2:  When the USD money market fund trade has settled (T+1), use the Securities Transfer feature on WebBroker or TD App to contribute your USD money market fund in-kind to the Canadian dollar component of the RSP/TFSA.

Step 3:  When the USD money market fund is in the Canadian dollar component of the RSP/TFSA, use the Securities Transfer feature on WebBroker or TD App to transfer the money market to the U.S. dollar component.

Note: It will take 2 business days for the money market fund to register to the Canadian dollar component of the RSP/TFSA before the transfer can be completed. During this time, you may not see the security available to transfer, or the request may be rejected and you will need to resubmit the transfer the following day.

Step 4:  When the USD money market fund is in the U.S. dollar component of the RSP/TFSA, place a sell order to redeem it for USD.

Note: It will take 1-2 business days for the money market fund to register to the U.S. dollar component of the RSP/TFSA before the sell order can be processed. During this time, your sell order may be rejected and you will need to re-enter the order following day.

Alternatively, you can contact TD Direct Investing to facilitate this transaction. Please log into the TD App and choose Contact Us or contact TD Direct Investing at 1-800-465-5463 to speak to an Investment Representative.
