Why Does TD Direct Investing Offer Two-Step Verification?

How do I use the soft token on the TD Authenticate App?

Our two-factor authentication process is designed to protect you. And now there's one more way to make the authentication process easy. When you download the TD Authenticate App to your mobile or computer and set up your credentials, the software generates a one-time password each time you log in to EasyWeb or WebBroker.

This soft token means that clients who are unable to receive a One Time Passcode through Voice or SMS can register for the service and generate their One Time Passcode online or offline by entering their credential (PIN or Biometrics). This means when we ask you how to confirm your identify, you can select text, phone, or use the TD Authenticate app to confirm it's you. Ready to set it up?
To use the One Time Passcode option:

  1. Download the TD Authenticate app to your personal device, phone and/or tablet through the Apple Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
  2. Enable the service by following the registration process in the TD Authenticate app, including logging into your EasyWeb/WebBroker Online Banking, successfully completing a One Time Passcode through SMS or Voice, and setting up your credentials such as a PIN or Biometrics.

Once you have downloaded the app and registered, you will be able to:

  • Generate a One Time Passcode through the TD Authenticate app by using the credential you have set up as part of the registration process
  • Select "Use App" when presented with a Two-Step Verification challenge through EasyWeb/WebBroker
  • Use the One Time Passcode from the TD Authenticate app in the Two-Step Verification screen
Security is a top priority at TD. To protect your TD Direct Investing account(s), we are replacing the older system of security questions with two-step verification to provide enhanced security for your TD Direct Investing account(s).

Two-step verification adds an extra layer of security and is designed to ensure that you're the only person who can access your TD Direct Investing account(s). Any time we need to confirm your identity online, we'll text or call you with a one-time security code.

How it Works
Two-step verification helps to keep your accounts safe from unauthorized users. Two-step verification confirms your identity by asking you for a one-time security code that is provided to you over the phone or via text message. This confirms it’s really you accessing your TD Direct Investing account.

You may be asked to verify your identity using two-step verification when:
  • You login from an unfamiliar device
  • You login from an unfamiliar location
  • You reset your password
If you're asked, just tell us which previously registered phone number to send your code to, and whether you want us to text or call you.  Once you receive your unique security code, simply enter it when prompted as part of the login process.

Setting up Two-Step Verification
You’ll be asked to set up two-step verification when you login to WebBroker. Setup takes just a few minutes:
  1. Add a phone number or numbers
  2. Add an email address for security alerts
  3. Select a login option
Make sure you add all your phone numbers (up to a maximum of five) while setting up two-step verification. That way you can choose which number you want your security code to be sent to at any particular time. You can receive your one-time security code by call or text on any mobile, land line and international phone number (extensions for mobile and land line numbers are not permitted).

One-time security codes are not available through email, as this method may not provide an adequate level of security to protect your account information.

What to Remember When You Use Two-Step Verification
Two-step verification improves the security of your online account(s).  Once you set up two-step verification, signing into your TD Direct Investing account(s) will require both your password and access to a trusted device or a secure phone number. Keep your list of secure phone number(s) up to date in WebBroker to help ensure you can access your account(s).

Important Travel Considerations
You may be prompted for a one-time security code while travelling, if you login from an unfamiliar device or location.

To avoid disruption while travelling, we encourage you to take the following steps:
  • If you are bringing your own mobile device or tablet, download the latest version of the TD app and make sure to login at least once before you leave for your trip.
  • If you are bringing your own laptop, make sure to login at least once before you leave for your trip and do not clear cookies after your login.
  • If you travel and have access to a land line or mobile phone number that you trust at your destination, we recommend adding that phone number to your Security Settings, before you leave.
  • When you arrive at your destination and have access to your trusted land line or mobile phone number, login to WebBroker at your earliest convenience to confirm you will have access to your account(s).
  • If you get challenged and you don't have access to your recognized device while travelling, you can call us collect, free of charge, at 416-983-5393. We will be happy to help you get access to your account(s).
