How do I calculate gains or losses using information available in WebBroker?

When you sell securities, the gain or loss is calculated by finding the difference between the proceeds received from the transactions (minus commissions) and your Adjusted Cost Base (ACB).

If your net proceeds from the transaction are greater than your ACB, you have realized a gain.

If your net proceeds from the transaction are less than your ACB, you have a realized loss.

Important: There are a number of considerations which may impact the gain and loss. For example, these may include the superficial loss rules under the Income Tax Act, which apply where shares sold at a loss are owned or re-purchased within 30 calendar days before or after the sale. These impacts are not reflected in WebBroker. For complex gain or loss calculations please consult your tax professional.

To calculate your gain or loss, use the following formula:

Gain/Loss = Proceeds from Sale – Book Cost – Commissions.

Where,

  • Proceeds from Sale (Market Price per unit of shares x Number of units of shares) is calculated using the information in your T5008/RL-18,
  • Book Cost = Adjust cost base per unit of shares x Number of Unit of shares, and
  • Commissions are obtained from your Trading Summary report.
