How do I trade using a short account in WebBroker?

A margin short account can be used for selling a stock that you don't own, in anticipation of buying it later when the price drops.

If you apply and qualify, you can trade using a short account in WebBroker, Advanced Dashboard and the TD app.

In WebBroker, go to the Accounts tab and under Account Details, select Holdings. Once on the Accounts Details page, select the TD Direct Investing CAD or USD Margin Short account you want to trade in, and follow the steps.

You can short sell in Advanced Dashboard either from the chart Short tab, the right click drop down menu under Order Entry, from the Short tab under Quote, from Order Status or from Holdings.

To short sell in the TD app, tap the Trade quick link from the dashboard. On the order entry screen, select the short account from the account selector menu. Alternatively, tap on short account from the My Accounts list, then the Holdings tab for the selected short account.

To apply for a margin short account, call an Investment Representative at 1-800-465-5463.

Using borrowed money to finance the purchase of securities involves greater risk than a purchase using cash resources only. If you borrow money to purchase securities, your responsibility to repay the loan and pay interest as required by its terms remains the same even if the value of the securities purchased declines. An investment strategy that uses borrowed money could result in far greater losses than an investment strategy that does not use borrowed money.
